Santa Ana gangbanger extradited from Mexico charged with multiple felonies for a 2011 murder

GANG MEMBER EXTRADITED FROM MEXICO TO BE ARRAIGNED FOR 2011 MURDER OF 16-YEAR-OLD RIVAL IN SANTA ANA

*Co-defendant was arrested shortly after the murder and is awaiting trial

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A gang member who was extradited from Mexico last week is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow for the 2011 murder of a 16-year-old rival in Santa Ana. Jesus Canales, 23, Santa Ana, was charged on July 25, 2011, with one felony count of special circumstances first degree murder committed for a criminal street gang purpose and one felony count of street terrorism, with sentencing enhancements for criminal street gang activity and discharge of a firearm causing death. If convicted, he faces a minimum sentence of life in state prison. He is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned tomorrow, Dec. 13, 2016, in Department CJ-1, Central Jail, Santa Ana.

Co-defendant Juan Manuel Galvan, 25, Santa Ana, was charged on July 25, 2011, with one felony count of murder and one felony count of street terrorism, with sentencing enhancements for criminal street gang activity and vicarious discharge of a firearm causing death. He is being held without bail and is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing on Feb. 2, 2017, at 9:00 a.m. in Department C-35, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. Continue reading→

Man attacked by four people and stabbed at a Santa Ana Chevron gas station

An unidentified 53-year-old man was stabbed on Monday night in Santa Ana after four people attacked him at the Chevron gas station located at Bristol Street and McFadden Avenue, according to the O.C. Register.

SAPD police officers found the injured man at that location at about 9 p.m. He had a stab wound on his torso after he had fought with three males and one female.  Continue reading→

SANTA ANA RESIDENTS AND SCHOOL CHILDREN TO BENEFIT FROM A NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART COMMUNITY AND RECREATION FACILITY – GROUNDBREAKING: DECEMBER 16, 2016 AT 11:00 A.M.

SAUSD and the City of Santa Ana are partnering on another joint-use project that will benefit students attending Roosevelt and Walker elementary schools and Santa Ana community members.

With an anticipated completion date of December 2017, a new Community Center will be built on the corner of Standard and Chestnut Avenue with easy access from both schools. SANTA ANA POLICE STEP UP DUI ENFORCEMENT

The Santa Ana Police Department will be conducting a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday, December 9th, 2016. It will begin at 9:30PM and is scheduled to conclude at 2:30AM. It will be conducted in the area of 2500 W. 5th St., in the City of Santa Ana.

The primary purpose of a DUI Checkpoint is to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. The DMV reports that unlicensed drivers are 4.9 times more likely to cause a fatal crash than a licensed driver. Continue reading→

Long Beach man charged with stabbing a man to death in Santa Ana

Logan James Cunningham, a 27-year-old Long Beach man was charged Tuesday in the stabbing death of a man outside a Circle K store in Santa Ana in August, according to the O.C. Register.

Cunningham is also facing a count of murder with an enhancement for using a deadly weapon in connection.  Continue reading→

The City Council has already decided Santa Ana’s new brand – Sanctuary City

The City of Santa Ana recently announced that they have partnered with North Star Destination Strategies to develop a community “Brand” for marketing the area to residents, businesses and visitors in the year 2017 and beyond. However that branding effort might have already been settled when the Santa Ana City Council decided this week to support a resolution declaring Santa Ana to be a Sanctuary City.

City employees in these sanctuary areas are directed not to contact the federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency when they become aware of an illegal alien in the community, according to the Sanctuary Cities website. Continue reading→

Do you remember Nativo Lopez? He was a Santa Ana School Board member who was recalled in 2003 due in part to allegations that he was impeding the implementation of Proposition 227 in the 62,000-student school system. Prop. 227 was the measure backed by wealthy Republican Ron Unz that put a stop to bilingual education in California. Unz also spent $100,00 to gather the signatures that put the Lopez recall on the ballot.

But in the November General Election this year California’ voters reversed Prop. 227 – by passing Prop. 58 they restored bilingual education in the Golden State. And this week the Santa Ana City Council passed a Sanctuary City resolution. Continue reading→

Should non citizens be allowed to vote in Santa Ana local elections

Santa Ana’s City Council members voted 5-0 Tuesday in favor of adopting a Sanctuary City resolution that requires the city to strengthen various policies that already exist to further protect undocumented residents, according to the O.C. Register.

Santa Ana’s Sanctuary City resolution is rather toothless. The City Council could have made this an ordinance as the resolution is not a law. It is more of a P.R. move. Continue reading→

The Santa Ana City Council will be considering a resolution at their meeting tonight to declare Santa Ana to be a Sanctuary City.

If passed, the resolution would require the city prohibit using city resources for immigration enforcement; reaffirm its commitment to preventing biased-based policing; exercise maximum discretion in policing; protect sensitive information; provide training for affected employees, officials and agents; and explore the feasibility of establishing a task force for oversight, according to the O.C. The CHP pursued and stopped a suspected car thief by John Wayne Airport on Sunday night

A suspected car thief led the California Highway Patrol in a pursuit that started in Laguna Beach and ended in by the John Wayne Airport, according to the O.C. Register.

As is often the case the car in question, a blue Honda Civic, was reported stolen in Santa Ana. The suspect took the stolen car to Laguna Beach where local police officers tried to stop the driver but of course he took off, traveling down Newport Coast Drive before heading southbound on the 73. Santa Ana man arrested in Fountain Valley for alleged car burglaries

CAR BURGLAR ARRESTED

On November 21, 2016, a vehicle burglary occurred at 17200 Newhope Street in Fountain Valley. During the incident, the vehicle’s right front passenger window was smashed and a purse and wallet was taken. The crime was captured on video surveillance and a license plate was obtained on the suspect vehicle, a green 2011 Scion sedan. Video surveillance also captured the suspect using the victim’s credit cards at various locations in Santa Ana.

On November 26, 2016, a vehicle burglary occurred at an apartment complex located on the 10300 block of Slater Avenue in Fountain Valley. The suspect entered the vehicle by smashing a window and fled after taking music CDs. A security guard, who was working at the location, heard glass breaking and went to investigate. The security guard was able to write down the suspect’s license plate as he drove away. The license plate and vehicle description matched the vehicle used in the first incident. Continue reading→

Community Alert: HUD-VASH Project-Based Vouchers Award

The City of Santa Ana is pleased to announce that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has awarded seventy-five (75) vouchers for homeless veterans to the Housing Authority of the City of Santa Ana. This supportive housing assistance is provided through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by the VA.
