A man with a knife robbed a business today in Santa Ana at the 3800 block of South Bristol Street at around 1 p.m., according to the O.C. Register.
The man demanded that an employee of the targeted business turn over an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect took the money and fled from the crime scene. Continue reading

Local Principal, Lisa D. Gonzales-Solomon, Among America’s Best School leaders, is honored for sustaining strong schools during National Principals Month.

Gonzales-Solomon is among 59 outstanding elementary and middle school principals from across the nation and abroad who have been named as 2015 National Distinguished Principals (NDP) by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). Gonzales-Solomon is principal of Madison Elementary School in Santa Ana, California. The NDPs will be honored Oct. 16 at an awards banquet at the Capital Hilton Hotel in Washington, D.C., as part of a two-day program. Have you ever heard of the Parent Trigger Law? It was authored by a Democrat, Gloria Romero, but has become a tool for Republicans to turn public schools into charter schools. Locally this has come to the forefront at the Palm Lane Elementary School in Anaheim.
The Parent Trigger can only be used in low performing schools – and Santa Ana has a lot of those. SAUSD Trustee Cecilia Iglesias was involved in the Palm Lane effort as an employee of State Senator Bob Huff, a Republican in north Orange County. Now she has recruited a team of candidates to take over the SAUSD School Board.
The candidates include Angie Rosario Cano, Reyna Orozco and Marilyn Bernaudo-Delgado. Cano ran previously for the School Board in 2014. Continue reading

The Santa Ana Police Department has been awarded a $343,480.00 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for a year-long program of special enforcement and public awareness efforts to prevent traffic-related deaths and injuries. The Santa Ana Police Department will use the funding as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to keep our roadways safe and improve the quality of life through both enforcement and education.
“The Santa Ana Police Department is committed to traffic safety and doing everything within our power to ensure the roadways are safe for drivers and pedestrians. In fact, traffic safety is a major component of the City’s Strategic Plan and substantial efforts have been made in this area as we engage internal and external stakeholders on this issue. Working in partnership with the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), this grant will allow the Santa Ana Police Department to dedicate the necessary resources to target violations that contribute to dangerous driving conditions through education and enforcement, which will help meet our strategic goals to enhance the lives of our residents as well as visitors to Santa Ana.” — Chief Carlos Rojas. The City of Santa Ana will be holding its Third Annual Plaza Navideña event on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Downtown Plaza Calle Cuatro on the corner of Fourth and French Streets. The event will take place from 5:00pm-8:00pm and will feature the Santa Ana’s Best Tamale contest. All licensed restaurants located within the city are invited to compete!

Bao Nguyen Announces Candidacy for Congress in CA-46
Garden Grove Mayor running to replace Loretta Sanchez
SANTA ANA, CA – Bao Nguyen today announced his candidacy for Congress in California’s 46th district. Bao, whose family emigrated from Vietnam, has devoted his career to the citizens of the district, serving as a teacher, running for school board and most recently, serving as the Mayor of Garden Grove.
“I’m excited to announce that I will be running for Congress in the place I have always called home. I can’t wait to take my passion, and the passions of so many others around me, to bring reform to Washington, D.C,” said Mayor Bao Nguyen on Tuesday.

Ralphs, the Kroger-owned grocery chain, is closing their last grocery store in Santa Ana, at 2741 W. MacArthur Blvd., on Oct. 23, according to the O.C. Register.
Ralphs closed a popular location on 17th St. and Bristol a few years ago. That store is now a Smart and Final. The Kroger company also closed a popular Food 4 Less location on Grand and 17th a few years ago. That site remains empty today.

Another day, another gang murder. This time a man was fatally shot in what police are saying was a possibly gang-related attack, at about 7:35 p.m., at the 1700 block of North Spurgeon St., according to the O.C. Register.
The victim was hit in the upper body. Another man who may have been with the victim during the shooting was released after being questioned. He was not shot. Continue reading
What a way to start the week! A man who is suspected of assault with a deadly weapon was reported to be inside of a stolen car at 6:30 a.m. near Bristol Street and Edinger in Santa Ana, but when the SAPD showed up he took off, according to the O.C. Register.
The SAPD reported that the man was driving a green Honda Accord that was also involved in a felony assault with a deadly weapon incident. No further details about the auto theft were made available by the SAPD.
The police pursued the suspect at speeds of up to 90 mph, driving through the cities of Santa Ana, Fountain Valley and Garden Grove. Continue reading
Rick Miller, the SAUSD’s Superintendent, pulls down over $363K in pay and benefits per year, according to Transparent California. To put that into perspective consider that President Barack Obama, the leader of the free world, barely makes more than Miller, at $395K a year, according to PayWizard. And the median household income in Santa Ana is just over $53K, according to the U.S. Census. That means that Miller makes almost seven times what most Santa Ana households earn.
So Miller got paid, big time. But he is dragging his heels about paying his teachers even though the SAUSD has a twenty million dollar surplus. They are also blowing 24 million a year on consultants! Continue reading
The Orange County Heritage Museum will host its 2nd Annual Civil War Days on Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18, 2015, 10 a.m. each day. Civil War Days is an event that will bring to life one of the most important and pivotal time periods of United States History.

HCA Provides Outreach and Services to Civic Center Homeless Population

HCA’s Behavioral Health Services Outreach and Engagement (BHS O&E) Program and Public Health’s Comprehensive Health Assessment Team Homeless (CHAT-H) provide expanded outreach and services to the Civic Center homeless population on Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
BHS O&E provide services to homeless and those individuals at risk of homelessness who are dealing with a behavioral health issue. Services are provided throughout Orange County to all ages which include: street outreach, coping skill psychoeducational groups, case management, and wellness screenings. The primary goal of BHS O&E is to link individuals to behavioral health and other supportive services by addressing participant’s barriers to accessing these services. This occurs by building trusting relationships with the homeless community and collaborating with other service providers. Continue reading
