OC Streetcar Project Takes Next Step

A Memorandum of Understanding was authorized between OCTA and the City of Santa Ana

The OC Streetcar project marked its latest milestone this week as the Orange County Transportation Authority Board of Directors agreed to a memorandum of understanding with the city of Santa Ana outlining the roles and responsibilities associated with the development, implementation, operations and maintenance of the project.

The OC Streetcar is planned to travel through the cities of Santa Ana and Garden Grove, intended to provide easy connections for people traveling from trains and buses to employment, retail and recreational areas. Continue reading→

SAUSD bike safety poster contest winner

A Santa Ana Unified School District employee driving a work box truck struck and killed a 13-year-old bicyclist named Priscilla Vallejo, on Monday morning, before 7:50 a.m., as she was in a crosswalk on the West Edinger Avenue and South Center Street intersection, causing officials to close a major street for at least six hours, according to the O.C. Register.

Police officers and OCFA paramedics performed CPR on the victim, but they were not successful. She died at the accident location due to “severe injuries to the head and chest.” Continue reading→

Major SAPD search underway near Hemlock and Baker

A heavy Santa Ana police presence has been reported on Hemlock and Baker, with over ten patrol units in the neighborhood, according to Santa Ana Copwatch. They have also reported that the police are shutting down the surrounding area looking for someone in an apartment complex.

The search includes multiple helicopters, around Hemlock and Baker, and police cars have been seen speeding and reportedly driving recklessly in the surrounding area. Continue reading→

6-year-old girl calls 911 and saves her mom from a kidnapping near Memorial Park

A Riverside County man named Heriberto Leon accosted his estranged 30-year-old common-law wife today in Santa Ana and tried to kidnap her but was prevented from dragging her off by the woman’s brave little 6-year-old daughter, who called 911 and summoned the SAPD, according to the O.C. Register.

The woman, the little girl and 8-year-old brother were walking to a bus stop after a soccer game at Memorial Park, when Leon drove up in a brown, four-door Chrysler Concorde and took them by surprise.

The woman had been separated from Leon for three years and in 2014 she had gotten sole custody of the children. She also had obtained a restraining order against Leon because he had a history of domestic violence. Continue reading→

The Santa Ana Communication Linkage Forum (“Com-Link”) strives to promote positive leadership, community participation, unity and pride in all neighborhoods by improving the quality of life in Santa Ana “block-by-block.” The Board of Com-Link established the Neighborhood Hero Award in 1998 to honor those individuals who have shown commitment and enthusiasm in bettering the quality of life in their neighborhoods.

On Thursday, June 25, 2015, I had the great pleasure of participating with the Board of Com-Link to celebrate and recognize 17 Neighborhood Heroes and 27 winners of the Most Beautiful Yard Program at the Bowers Museum. Clerk-Recorder Celebrates Second Year of Award Winning Special Saturday Hours to the Public

This past June 27 represented the end of the second year in which Clerk-Recorder Hugh Nguyen has opened his offices to the public one Saturday per month. The pilot program was implemented shortly after Hugh Nguyen became the Clerk-Recorder back in April 2013. The Saturday openings have turned out to be very popular with wedding parties and other customers.

Since implementing the special Saturday openings, the department has issued 3,633 marriage licenses, performed 2,299 marriage ceremonies, and issued 1,320 vital records. The department has also accepted 438 passports applications. In addition, more than 29,582 customers and guests visited the offices to obtain services or to witness their family members or friends tie the knot at the department’s marriage facilities. TWO MEN CHARGED WITH TRAFFICKING, PIMPING, AND PANDERING TEENAGE WOMAN IN SANTA ANA

SANTA ANA – Two men have been charged with trafficking, pimping, and pandering a teenage woman in Santa Ana. Caine Alexander Herrera, 18, and Emari Litrell Johnson, 18, both of Fresno, are each charged with one felony count of human trafficking, one felony count of pimping, and one felony count of pandering. If convicted, they each face a maximum sentence of 20 years in state prison. Both defendants are being held on $250,000 and must prove the money is from a legal and legitimate source before posting bond. The defendants were both arraigned yesterday and are scheduled for pre-trial on July 14, 2015, at 8:30 a.m. in Department C-55, Central Justice Center, Santa Ana. Continue reading→

Community Alert: PUBLIC ART SCULPTURE UNVEILING PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE JAPANESE-AMERICAN FARMING LEGACY AT THE NEW SANTA ANA BICYCLETRAILHEAD

A public art sculpture will be unveiled at the new Flower Street bike and walking trail. The sculpture marks the trail entry into the City of Santa Ana from the City of Costa Mesa trail on the northeast corner of Flower and Sunflower Streets. The new trail takes bikers, runners, and walkers one-mile north on Flower Street to Alton Street, which will connect to the Santa Ana River Trail system.

On Saturday, July 11, 2015 at 10 AM, a sculpture designed by artist Richard Turner will be unveiled at the trailhead. The sculpture will be unveiled and shown to the public for the first time. The art was chosen through a competitive art selection process managed for the City by Arts Orange County. Mr. Turner’s concept was commissioned by the City of Santa Ana because it creatively shows the contributions of the Japanese American farmers in the region and adds to the richness of our common diverse cultural heritage. Mr. Turner’s vision showcases a signature crop that was commonly grown in this area by Japanese-American farmers. The design also symbolizes the beauty and simple legacy style of Japanese gardens. Domestic argument results in hit and run crashes in Santa Ana and Costa Mesa

A man and woman were in in a domestic argument in the South Coast Plaza parking lot at around 8:30 p.m. yesterday when the man got into a vehicle and drove northbound on Bristol Street, where he struck three vehicles near MacArthur Boulevard, said Sgt. Carol Salvatierra of the Santa Ana Police Department, according to the O.C. Register.

The suspect was later identified, by the SAPD, as 19-year-old Ricardo Navarro Tolento, of Santa Ana.

The suspect then drove south on Bristol Street and he hit more vehicles in Costa Mesa, according to Costa Mesa Police Lt. Ed Everett. Continue reading→

L.A.’s famous Scoops ice cream to open a new shop in Santa Ana on July 10

Scoops, a popular Los Angeles-based ice cream shop, will have its grand opening in Santa Ana from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday, July 10, 2015, according to the O.C. Register.

Scoops’ hours will be from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. They’re located about four blocks from the East End, on the same block as St. Joe’s, at 605 E. Santa Ana Blvd., Santa Ana, according to the OC Weekly.

Apparently the owners of Scoops, husband and wife team Peter and Valerie Ji, are opening their new location in Santa Ana because they feel the city is “up and coming.” Continue reading→

Budget Adds Services and Begins Fiscal Year With a $10 Million Surplus

Santa Ana, CA – The City of Santa Ana City Council unanimously approved a structurally balanced 2015 -2016 fiscal year budget of $476,515,630 at last night’s City Council meeting. The approved budget includes a $225.8 million General Fund budget and a Capital Improvement Program budget of $68 million. “After years of prudent decision making and tough budget actions, I am pleased that the economy has rebounded and Santa Ana is now in a favorable position to move forward,” stated Mayor Miguel Pulido. The Fiscal Year 2015-2016 (FY 15-16) Budget reflects a $45 million reserve and kicks-off with a projected $10 million minimum surplus to fund critical projects and plans. Continue reading→
