Aaron Kushner‘s grand plan to become the Rupert Murdoch of southern California jumped a bit closer to that shark today as Freedom Communications announced it’s scaling back the recently launched Long Beach Register from a six-day publication to one.
The Orange County Business Journal reports today:
Freedom Communications Holdings Inc. in Santa Ana announced it will shift its Long Beach Register from a standalone newspaper published six days a week to a weekly that it plans to deliver to about 61,000 area households on Sundays. The change is planned to take effect June 15. The weekly publication also will be bundled with the Los Angeles Register—which Freedom launched in April—and delivered subscribers in Long Beach on Sundays.

The City will be purchasing 4 new Retail Kiosks for the Artists Village in July 2014. Retail kiosks are ideal for small local business owners that do not yet have the financial stability to lease and operate out of a larger retail location in the City. These kiosks can operate as a retail incubator while the business develops and matures. Allan Fainbarg was born in Michigan and moved to Santa Ana in 1919 when he was only 10 months old. Shortly after arriving in Santa Ana, Allan’s father opened his first store “Eureka Shoes” located on 4th street. Allan attended Santa Ana High School and graduated from Santa Ana College in 1940. Santa Ana city leaders are set to take further steps to place a medical marijuana initiative on the November ballot, after supporters gathered enough signatures last year to force a citywide vote, according to the Voice of OC.
The proposal would prohibit the city from banning medical marijuana dispensaries, prevent city police from joining federal raids on pot shops and require that the city allow at least 22 pot shops, with no maximum.
At the same time, city council members will decide whether to create a competing ballot measure that would restrict the city to having no more than eight pot shops, all of which would have to be in industrial areas, and impose a 5 percent additional tax. Continue reading

The Orange County Educational Arts Academy will be offering its second annual Summer Arts Camp from June 23-August 1. Fees are $132 per week for the full day, 9 AM-4 PM, for students entering 1st through 8th grades in Fall 2014 or $75 for a half day. Extended day option is $60 per week from 7:00 AM-9 AM and 4 PM-6 PM.
Students currently in grades K-1 will have an imagination explorer themed class full of crafts, games, treasure hunts, water fun, sports, field trips. In addition, students will get to choose from cultural dance classes in the afternoon.
Students currently in grades 2-7 may choose from photography, beginning musical theatre, stop motion animation, lego robotics, painting, sports, ceramics, culinary arts, silent film, motion picture theatre, and architecture. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, CA – Recognizing the need to reach and serve the needs of our veterans and their families, the Santa Ana Public Library, with the support of the State Library and in coordination with CalVet, will be opening a Veterans Resource Center on June 20th. The Center’s mission is to respond to our veteran community’s informational, educational, and personal needs by connecting them with the services and resources available for their use.
The Center provides veterans an area to engage in researching benefits, completing applications, and, on occasion, meeting with veteran service organization representatives. The Veterans Resource Center is made possible in collaboration with Veterans Upward Bound at Santa Ana College. Continue reading
Shuntele Andrews, a retired Santa Ana teacher, is running for the SAUSD School Board in November. She taught Social Studies and History at Valley High School in Santa Ana for 35 years. She was raised in Santa Ana since the age of 11, attending Santa Ana public schools, going on to UCI to earn her Bachelor’s and then the University of Southern California to get her Masters of Education and teaching credentials. She has received the Teacher of the Year award three times and served as the Social Science/History department chair for five years. She has also served on the Blue Ribbon commission and several hiring committees for the principals of Valley High School. Upon retirement she has continued to work for SAUSD as a substitute and CELDT tester.

Advisory: Homicide Detectives investigating shooting related death 300 Blk South Halladay
On 05-31-14, at approximately 2224 hours, an officer was in the area of 600 E. Pine and heard gunshots. The officer observed several males running in the area. One of the males sustained a gunshot wound to the upper torso and collapsed in front of him. OCFA Paramedics responded and pronounced the male deceased.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene. A preliminary investigation revealed that someone in a vehicle fired at the victim and his companions in the area of 300 S. Halladay. The suspect vehicle fled the area and has not been located. Continue reading
Evidence Based Inc., a private Irvine-based company that provides risk-assessment services to courts, police agencies and municipalities, has hired Paul Walters, the former Santa Ana police chief as its executive vice president, according to the OC Business Journal.
Walters retired last year after serving in the role of police chief since 1988. During his tenure, he was recognized by President Bill Clinton for “community policing innovations,” as well as by President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, California Attorney General, the Governor of California, the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate and the Orange County Board of Supervisors.
