I have been advocating for Ward-Specific City Council elections, here in Santa Ana, for many years. Our current system, which features six Wards, forces candidates to campaign in the entire city. That is a very expensive proposition. It leads to corruption as the candidates inevitably have to sell out to Special Interests in order to raise the humongous amounts of money needed to run for our City Council.
Just how corrupt our system is came to light today in a Voice of OC article that fingered three of our Council Members for allegedly accepting money under less than legal circumstances, from an apartment developer of course.
Hope is not lost however as I have discovered that there is in fact an effort underway to place a measure on the ballot to allow the voters of this city to opt for a Ward-Specific Council election system. In that scenario the Council candidates would only have to campaign in one Ward. They could conceivably walk that ward all on their own. They could meet all the voters and garner their support. The Special Interests? They would be out of luck. Continue reading

A marijuana growing operation was discovered early Sunday morning, at about 1:10 a.m., when a fire broke out at a business complex in Santa Ana, at the Warner/Fairview Business Park in the 2200 block of South Fairview Street, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said, according to the O.C. Register.
Three out of the nine businesses in the shopping center sustained heavy smoke and fire damage. The cause is under investigation, according to ABC News.

SANTA ANA, Calif. – (November 29, 2013) – On Thursday, November 28, 2013 at approximately 1:38 p.m., Inmate Itzcoatl Ocampo (3-20-88) was pronounced deceased by medical staff at Western Medical Center (WMC), Santa Ana. Karina Onofre ran for Ward 5 on the Santa Ana City Council last year as the sole challenger to Roman Reyna, who beat her by over 12,000 votes according to Smart Voter.

Community Alert: City Reminds Everyone About Holiday Trash Schedule
SANTA ANA, CA (November 25, 2013) – During the upcoming holiday season, regular trash, recycling, and green waste collection will be delayed by one day for the remainder of the week. So, this Thanksgiving, regular Thursday trash pickup will be on Friday, and Friday’s regular pickup will be on Saturday. For Christmas and New Year’s, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday collections will similarly be delayed by only one day. Continue reading
