The Seventeenth Annual Inner-Coastal Watershed Clean-up Day is set for September 21, 2013, between 9 am and 12 pm, at Santiago Park. Registration begins at 9am at the Santiago Park Nature Center, which is located off of Memory Lane, a few blocks east of Main St., not far from the CityPlace and the MainPlace Mall, in Santa Ana. This event is sponsored by Trails4all.org.
A garbage patch estimated to be larger than the state of Texas is floating in the Pacific Ocean. Many animals eat this trash by mistake, or feed it to their young, killing countless sea turtles and birds each year. Continue reading
Motorcyclist: Francisco Rincon (19) Fountain Valley
On August 22, 2013 at 9:55 am, a Ford F150 Pickup was making a U-turn from eastbound 1st Street to westbound at Olive Street. A Yamaha R6 motorcycle driven by Francisco Rincon was westbound on 1st Street. The Ford driver saw the motorcycle accelerating toward the intersection. The Ford driver stopped in the #2 westbound lane. The Motorcyclist (Rincon) attempted to brake, lost control and struck the pickup. Continue reading
There were 30 crimes reported in Santa Ana on Thursday, August 22, 2013, by our friends at CrimeMapping. The crimes included five Vehicle Thefts and four Thefts from Vehicles. Beware – there appears to be a trend in town of criminals driving up by your car while you pump gas, and then sneaking open your passenger door and stealing your purse or briefcase, or computer bag. This is happening a lot so lock your car when you are pumping your gas!

SANTA ANA, CA – On Saturday, August 24, 2013 the Santa Ana Public Library TeenSpace Program will have the Youth Bike Forum from 3pm-5pm at the Santa Ana Public Library in Meeting Room A, 26 Civic Center Plaza, Santa Ana, CA 92701.
The Santa Ana Public Library TeenSpace Program will be bringing together Santa Ana youth to discuss bike issues in Santa Ana. At the event, guests will have the opportunity to learn about Santa Ana bike issues, such as bike lanes, bike trails, bike facilities, bike lockers/racks, and shared bike exchanges. All event participants will also have an opportunity to voice their ideas, opinions, and concerns about bike issues in Santa Ana. Any Santa Ana non-profit organizations who work with youth and Santa Ana youth are encouraged to attend the event. Continue reading

Giant Teddy, an Orange County company, has generously donated a giant 72” teddy bear to the Santa Ana Public Library. The Youth Services Department is excited to receive the new addition into the library and welcomes the public to greet our cuddly companion during one of the “Beary Extra Ordinary” storytimes.
The “Beary Extra Ordinary” storytimes will take place at the Santa Ana Public Library and the Newhope Library beginning Tuesday, August 20, 2013 and concluding Saturday, August 24, 2013. This event is open to the public and pre-registration is not required. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, CA – On Friday, August 23, 2013 the Santa Ana Public Library History Room and TeenSpace Program will host the Santa Ana Civic Archive Youth Engagement Forum from 6pm-8pm at the Southwest Senior Center.
With support from the Cal Humanities, in partnership with the NEH, and the California State Library through a Library Services and Technology Act grant, the Santa Ana Public Library’s History Room and TeenSpace Program will be bringing together Santa Ana youth and civic leaders. My wife and I drove the kids to New Mexico this summer for our annual family vacation. We visited the Carlsbad Caverns and stopped in Tucson and Tombstone along the way and on the way back. It was a very long drive and along the way we passed a semi truck that flipped on its side. I thought of this as I read about the tragic accident that took the life of a Santa Ana mother and father, Martin Saldana, 50, and Adela Santana, 46, on Saturday, August 10, 2013.
