The Santa Ana City Council’s Public Safety Committee is meeting on Tuesday, July 26, and the meeting promises to be an interesting one. The topics on the agenda, which is below, include discussion about a proposed C.U.P. (Conditional Use Permit) for the gay bar called the “Velvet Lounge,” which is supposed to open soon, and a Bail Bond Solicitation update (we wrote about that awhile ago – bail bondsmen are illegally soliciting for bails outside our jail, and most of these guys don’t even have businesses in town). ESPN says that Mexican soccer fans are the best sports fans in the U.S.A.
Fans of the Mexican National Soccer Team, known as “El Tri,” are the best sports fans in the U.S.A., according to a new column in ESPN Magazine. These fans travel – anywhere in the U.S.A. where they can watch their beloved “El Tri.” You can see their effect on Facebook, where El Tri has almost 4,000 fans.
And big business has taken note.
Whom did Jerry Jones book to headline the inaugural sporting event at Cowboys Stadium? Mexico, which set a soccer attendance record in Texas in its 2009 Gold Cup quarterfinal against Haiti. And guess who kicked off the first full event at New Meadowlands Stadium the following year? Mexico again, in a friendly against Ecuador that was attended by 77,705 fans, according to ESPN. Debunking the lies being spread by Santa Ana’s soccer-hating Usual Suspects
The anti-soccer haters here in Santa Ana are actually very few in number – but like noisy chihuahuas they are a pain in the rear – and the media has been paying attention to them, even though they hardly represent the overall population of Santa Ana.
Now they have even started a very lame little blog, using antiquated Blogspot software – and they have even infected the Washington Square Neighborhood. The good news is that now we can go about debunking their silly arguments.
Here are the half-truths and exaggerations that these folks are passing along as if they were facts (my answers follow each of their allegations): Continue reading

SAUSD teacher starts a new blog
A friend of mine who teaches at the Santa Ana Unified School District has started a new blog for local teachers. The focus is on GATE training (gifted and talented education) but the scope is teaching in general. Here are a few excerpts from her opening post:
The idea for this blog came about at a recent GATE training provided by the Santa Ana Unified School District. At the training, teachers said they wished they had more opportunities to share, plan together, and process what they were learning. Well, now we do – right here. This blog was created by teachers for teachers – a place to discuss, reflect, get or give ideas, ask questions, encourage each other – you name it – this is the place. And, it’s certainly not just for teachers of identified GATE students. Many of the GATE strategies are good teaching for all our students. Continue reading
L.A. Times focuses on effort to save the Sexlinger Orchard
The L.A. Times published an article about the effort to save the Sexlinger Orchard this week. Here are a few excerpts from the article:
A real estate company wants to build 24 single-family homes on the land, but opponents with the Save Our Orchard Coalition say the project, currently in the review stage with the city, would destroy valuable property that could be preserved and used as an educational center and community garden.
The plot, purchased by the Sexlinger family in 1913, is one of the region’s oldest unaltered orange groves. A Craftsman bungalow, built by the family in 1914, still stands.
The Save the Sexlinger Orchard supporters are going to be holding another demonstration, on Saturday July 23, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, at the entrance of the Sexlinger Orchard. Continue reading

Santa Ana anti-soccer Klan of Usual Suspects rally tonight
Few folks today remember that the KKK was big in Santa Ana back in the late 1800’s. But they were – in fact a fellow named Dr. Henry William Head lived in Santa Ana, where he served as the leader of the Santa Ana KKK, according to the OC Weekly. But they didn’t wear the usual Klan clothing or even call themselves Klansmen because they were ordered to abandon those ways – so they wouldn’t get caught.
Years later the heritage of these haters lives on. Today we call them Santa Ana’s Usual Suspects – and they gathered at a “rally” tonight, at 6 pm, at the home of XXXXX XXX, at XXX N. Heliotrope, to complain about the Chivas USA, a soccer team in Los Angeles that is very unlikely to move here to Santa Ana. Continue reading
