Santa Ana College – The Saga of Mismanagement Continues

The mismanagement within the Rancho Santiago CCD (RSCCD) has been well documented. An editorial we previously posted accurately described the leader of the District, Raul Rodriguez as a “train wreck.” In every organization, mismanagement creates “rot” that trickles downward and the RSCCD is no exception. When it directly affects the students and taxpayers, there are no excuses.

Santa Ana College’s (SAC) Psychological Services program has always been an integral part of the services that the college has provided to its 30, 000 students. In May of 2017, the program employed two tenured full time psychologists, a part-time psychologist and three doctoral level interns to serve the mental health needs of SAC’s student body. As detailed on the college’s website, the program provided support for students in the areas of anger management, anxiety/stress management, depression/lack of motivation, domestic violence, eating disorders, family and social relationships/life transitions, LGBTQ related-support, sexual assault, and substance abuse. This service is not free for students. Students pay a Health Center fee of $19 a semester to avail themselves of support from Psychological Services as well as SAC’s Student Health Center. Dysfunctional administration affecting student health services at Santa Ana College

Do you remember when Raul Rodriguez, chancellor of the Rancho Santiago Community College District, called the Coast Community College District’s trustees “dysfunctional” and he alleged that they had displayed “passive aggressive racism” when they fired their Chancellor Andrew Jones, an African-American? Turns out the CCCD Trustees had many good reasons to fire Jones – he simply wasn’t very good at his job. And if they were racists why would they have hired him in the first place? (Source – O.C. Register)

Donations Will Assist Efforts to Provide College Students with Government and Leadership Experiences

(Santa Ana, CA) — At a regularly scheduled Board of Trustees meeting on October 26, the Rancho Santiago Community College District (RSCCD) Foundation Board donated $10,000 to the Santa Ana College and Santiago Canyon College Associated Student Government organizations to help provide students on both campuses with important government and leadership opportunities.

“The Foundation is committed to our students and has repeatedly expressed its desire to ensure that they are the first to benefit financially from our upcoming education consulting endeavor across the globe,” said Rancho Santiago Community College District Foundation Board Member Arianna Barrios, who helped present the checks along with fellow Foundation Board member Nelida Yanez. “Since our first wave of project revenue is not anticipated to arrive until early next year, our partners at Chevron were gracious enough to assist us with this donation of funds. Santiago Canyon and Santa Ana Colleges Offer 4-Week January Intersession

(Santa Ana)— Santa Ana and Santiago Canyon College are offering a January intersession beginning January 6, 2014 through February 2, 2014. Students who were enrolled during fall 2013 will be able to register for classes starting Monday, November 4. New and returning students can register beginning November 6 and registration remains open until January 3, 2014.

A wide range of classes are available at both colleges with an emphasis on general education requirements, including English, mathematics, science, social sciences, kinesiology, and more. Three October Film Screenings Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month

The free screenings will be held on Friday, October 12; Friday, October 19; and Friday, October 26 at 6:00 p.m. in D-101 at Santiago Canyon College, 8045 E. Chapman Avenue, Orange. The O.C. Register’s editorial board opposes Santa Ana’s Measure Q

The Orange County Register’s Editorial Board warned voters about Prop. 39 in 2000. Voters narrowly passed it, 53 percent to 47 percent; it dropped the approval threshold for local school bonds from two-thirds to 55 percent.

Now school bond measures are proliferating – even as the Democrats try to raise our taxes statewide with Governor Jerry Brown’s Prop. 30.

Nominations sought for 2011 Santa Ana College Hall of Fame

The Santa Ana College (SAC) Foundation is seeking nominations for its 2011 Hall of Fame honoring outstanding alumni achievement. The deadline for nominations isFriday, February 25, 2011 at 5:00 p.m.

Introduced in 1955, the SAC Hall of Fame documents the contributions made by more than 170 outstanding SAC alumni in many fields. The SAC Foundation welcomes nominations of any alumni who have made significant contributions to their profession and/or to the local or global community. Recipients will be honored at an induction ceremony on Friday, May 20, and will also be recognized at the college’s spring commencement ceremony.

The selection criteria for this honor are:

  • Graduation from Santa Ana College or completion of a minimum of 30 units of coursework at SAC;
  • Documented distinction and achievement through professional and/or personal efforts since leaving Santa Ana College; and
  • Recipients must be available to attend the awards ceremony and commencement.

Last year’s inductees include:

  • Dr. Ruben Barron, a retired educator, who has dedicated his life to supporting education for immigrants, and improving the California educational system;
  • Mark Lowry, the director of the Orange County Food Bank;
  • Joel Ohlgren, J.D., a retired lawyer and former member of the International Insolvency Institute delegation the United Nations Commission on International Trade; and
  • Karen Gardner Richards, a retired teacher with 37 years of service with the Tustin Unified School District.
