Ernesto Javier Canepa Diaz’s family wants to know why the SAPD shot and killed him

Holding signs reading “Ernesto Canepa’s Life Matters” and with expletives directed toward police, more than a dozen people at Tuesday’s Santa Ana City Council meeting protested Friday’s officer-involved shooting that left Ernesto Javier Canepa Diaz, a 27-year-old man dead, according to the O.C. Register.

Few details have emerged about the incident. Santa On Tuesday, Santa Ana Police told the Orange County Register that Canepa was accused of robbing a 63-year-old woman on Feb. 13 while she was loading her grandchildren into a car in the 2300 block of N. Location: El Zocalo (Restaurant) – 301 N. Tustin

Summary: On 3/2/15 at approximately 12:47 a.m , patrol officers responded to the El Zocalo Restaurant located at 301 N. Tustin regarding an unknown trouble call. Upon their arrival, officers discovered multiple gunshot victims at the scene. One victim was deceased at the scene and (4) other people were transported to area hospitals. Shooting at El Zocalo results in one death and several injuries

A confrontation at El Zocalo Mexican Grill and Seafood, located at 301 N. Tustin Ave., in Santa Ana, ended violently early Monday morning when a gunman fatally shot one man and a crowd of customers and security guards subdued the shooter and another attacker, according to the L.A. Times.

Two men were also shot, but are expected to survive, and were taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana with another man whose head was injured, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading→

Advisory: SAPD traffic investigators need media and community assistance locating vehicle wanted in hit and run collision

On 02/28/15 at approximately 0819 hours, officers responded to the scene of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision near the intersection of 5th St. and Fairview St.

When officers arrived at the scene, they located the pedestrian (a male juvenile) lying in the northbound lanes of Fairview St. just south of Civic Center adjacent to the east sidewalk. The pedestrian was treated by paramedics and he was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries. Continue reading→

Man shot and killed by SAPD police officers during a robbery investigation

Police fatally shot a man in Santa Ana on Friday morning during a robbery investigation, in the area near Third and South Shelton streets, according to the O.C. Register.

SAPD police officers found a car in the 1000 block of West Third Street, in Santa Ana, between 10 and 11 a.m. on Friday that that matched the description of a vehicle that was involved in an earlier robbery. They had been searching for the vehicle and a suspect.

As the officers approached the car they encountered a man and he was subsequently shot and killed by the officers. Police believe the shooting occurred outside of the Charger. Continue reading→

Man robs a Santa Ana 96 Cent Store and steals the employee’s car too

Santa Ana police are investigating an armed robbery that occurred at the 96 Cents Up Store in the 1500 block of West First Street, on Tuesday morning, at around 9:35 a.m., according to the O.C. Register.

A man with a knife not only took the money from the store’s cash register – he also grabbed the keys to the store employee’s 2007 Toyota Highlander, and used it to get away, on West First St. Continue reading→

Poll – Should the SAPD put video cameras on their police officers?

The SAPD is considering requiring police to wear cameras that record video and audio of interactions with the public, according to the O.C. Register.

In Santa Ana, there was one officer-involved shooting in 2014 that did not result in a fatality. In 2013, there were seven officer-involved shootings, five of which were fatal, said Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.

The City of Santa Ana will have to come up with about $1 million dollars to pay for the cameras and there is some debate at the SAPD about privacy issues and whether the cameras might discourage residents from talking to police for fear of being tape recorded. Continue reading→

BOYFRIEND SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON FOR ATTEMPTING TO MURDER MAN AND POSTING THREATS ON VICTIM’S FACEBOOK

*Defendant’s girlfriend was sentenced to nine years in state prison in this case

SANTA ANA – A man was sentenced today for attempting to murder the friend of the female defendant and posting threats on the victim’s Facebook page. Fernando Sanchez, 20, Santa Ana, pleaded guilty today to one felony count each of attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, criminal threats, and shooting at an inhabited dwelling house with a sentencing enhancement for the personal use of a firearm. Sanchez was sentenced to 20 years in state prison.

Co-defendant Jessica Gascon, 21, Santa Ana, pleaded guilty to one felony count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and was sentenced to nine years in state prison. Continue reading→

Three men arrested after fleeing in a stolen car in Santa Ana’s Ward 4

Three unidentified men were caught by the SAPD today after they tried to get away in a stolen car.

Santa Ana releases a pedestrian safety survey after a man is struck by two vehicles

A 78-year-old Santa Ana man, Lamberto Mejia, was hit and killed by two vehicles this early this morning at 5:30 a.m. after he tried to cross outside of a crosswalk at the 1700 block of West McFadden Avenue, which is near Jerome Park and MLK Elementary School, according to the O.C. Register. The incident happened in Santa Ana’s Ward 4, which is represented on the City Council by Councilman David Benavides.

Keep in mind the fact that it is still dark at 5:30 a.m. – and the two drivers who hit Mejia stayed at the scene and spoke to the police, who closed McFadden Ave. between S. Raitt St. and S. Pacific Ave. until 11 am today.

Ironically a few hours later the City of Santa Ana sent out a press release asking residents to fill out an online survey to “help make our streets safer for biking, walking, and driving.” Continue reading→

Police chase and catch a reckless driver who hit several cars in DTSA

An SAPD police officer tried to stop a fellow who was driving recklessly this evening at around 5:15 pm near North Main Street and West Washington Ave, which is just over one mile from the SAPD headquarters. The incident happened in Santa Ana’s Ward 2, which is represented by Santa Ana Councilwoman Michele Martinez.

The driver took off, going south on North Main Street – hitting several cars that were stopped near the 5th Street intersection, according to the O.C. Register.

The reckless driver, who was not identified by the SAPD, continued fleeing down North Main St., crashing into yet another car, near 4th St., which totaled the car and set off a fire. Continue reading→

Suspect: Francisco Alvarez (50) Santa Ana – In Custody (2) Counts of Attempt Murder

Victim: Female (21) Santa Ana

At approximately 12:20 p.m., the Santa Ana Police Department received multiple 911 calls of a stabbing in progress in the area of 1900 South Susan Street.

As officers were responding to the location, callers continued to state the male suspect was repeatedly stabbing the female victim. Witnesses intervened to assist the victim and followed the suspect who fled on foot southbound on Susan then eastbound on Harvard. Continue reading→

Spurgeon Intermediate on lock down after shots fired nearby

The Santa Ana School Police Department has reported that shots were heard at around 3 pm by Spurgeon Intermediate School and it was placed on lock down temporarily as a precautionary measure.
