The Santa Ana Unified School District has a new Mobile App available in the Apple and Google Play Store for free. It features daily news, photographs, and videos of the students and staff that comprise the district. By simply typing Santa Ana Unified in the app store or SAUSD, the user can download the app and begin immediately staying connected with the district and the schools of their choice.

Taft Elementary / Taft Deaf and Hard of Hearing in Santa Ana, CA Celebrates the Unveiling of a Newly Renovated Library from Target and The Heart of America Foundation
Makeover includes 2,000 new books and technology upgrades
What: Target (NYSE:TGT) and The Heart of America Foundation will unveil a newly renovated library at Taft Elementary/Taft Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Several hundred volunteer hours were invested in the redesign and construction of the library space, which features 2,000 new books, furniture, carpet and shelves, and a complete technology upgrade, including new iPads interactive white boards and more. By reimagining school libraries and transforming outdated spaces into state-of-the-art learning centers, Target continues to foster a love of reading in students across the country.
This year, Taft Elementary/Taft Deaf and Hard of Hearing is one of 25 elementary schools across the country to receive a new library as part of the Target School Library Makeover program, which will culminate with the celebration of the 200th School Library Makeover on November 14, a major program milestone. SAUSD Maintains and Improves its Commitment to After School Programs
Since 2008, the Santa Ana Unified School District has utilized outside companies (Think Together) to manage its after school programs. Due to changing conditions, there will be a District-run after school program staffed by employees of the Santa Ana Unified School District. This program will begin after the winter break on Monday, January 5, 2015. The current after school program companies will continue to provide services through December 19, 2014.There will be a seamless transition for students.
The new after school program called “Engage 360°”, will provide increased opportunities in such areas as physical activity, academic support, visual and performing arts, science, technology, mathematics, engineering, specialized movement, and leadership. All students currently enrolled in the after school program will automatically be placed in the new after school program Engage 360°. Parents do not need to submit any additional paperwork. The program will continue to be offered at no charge to parents.

A Santa Ana City Council candidates forum was held this week and surprise barely anyone in the City of Santa Ana attended or even knew about it. Check out who did show up, as pictured above. Does that look like Santa Ana?
The reality is that unless we televise these forums they will have very little impact on the voters. And the shame of it is that both the City of Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Unified School District have vast internal public relations operations that include their own TV channels on local Cable and AT&T U-Verse.
So why aren’t the City Council candidates forums televised and why aren’t there any SAUSD School Board candidates forums? It all comes down to incumbent protection and that is just wrong.

Santa Ana parents are demanding that city officials reverse their decision to remove school crossing guards without warning, saying the move is putting children’s lives in danger, according to the Voice of OC.
About 25 crossing guards were removed near Santa Ana schools as of the start of the school year last Tuesday, according to police officials.
But parents from at least one campus protested, and the city has since reinstated a crossing guard, at least temporarily, near Santiago Elementary School, according to the O.C. Register. Continue reading

California School Districts Vie for $40,000 in Prizes in got milk? Breakfast Challenge
Individual students can win up to $1000 via social media
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. –The California Milk Processor Board (CMPB), the creator of got milk?, has partnered with 15 school districts across the Golden State to present its seventh annual Breakfast Challenge to launch the new school year and remind students to fuel up with the most important meal of the day. Studies have shown that eating breakfast helps students do better in mathematics and school overall. Breakfast also boosts vitamin intake, helping increase energy and focus.[1] The Breakfast Challenge, which runs from August to October, encourages daily breakfast consumption with milk at school through a friendly competition between school districts. The school in each district (or group of districts) with the greatest increase in breakfast participation will win $3,000 towards student activities.
“Research shows that students who eat a healthy breakfast are more attentive in the classroom and do better in school,” says registered dietitian, Dr. Wendy Bazilian. “And feeding our students breakfast with milk is key to supporting their success.”

One of my complaints about the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) over the years has been that they communicate via phone for the most part and don’t usually email the parents. But today is the first day of the new school year and the SAUSD’s Superintendent, Dr. Rick Miller, sent out an email to parents with useful information for the new school year – including the introduction of the district’s new smart phone app!
