SAUSD principal votes to slash OC Lutheran schools’ funding

Planning commissioners have moved forward with a plan to build houses on the old Sexlinger property, and to save the century-old farmhouse and to preserve 10 orange trees of the more than 200 on the property, according to the O.C. Register.

But one Planning Commissioner voted against the compromise. Patrick Yrarrazaval, a Principal at the SAUSD’s Valley High School, spoke in favor of the conservancy’s 50/50 alternative as he voted against the compromise.

“I ask the question to the applicants, how much money do the two schools need to fulfill the desires of Martha Sexlinger?” Yrarrazaval said. Continue reading→

They are still trying to save the Sexlinger Orchard which should be demolished

The Santa Ana City Council will be considering what to do about the Sexlinger Farmhouse and Orange Orchard at the City Council meeting on Feb. 4, 2014, according to an organization that is trying to save the Sexlinger Orchard, which is bounded roughly by East Santa Clara Avenue to the north, Portola Park on the east, Avalon Avenue to the south, and Concord Street on the west.

On June 4, 2012, the City Council approved a resolution that listed the Sexlinger Farmhouse and Orchard on the Santa Ana Register of Historic Properties. The action designated the site as “Key” because it met the selected criteria of being 50 years or older and was connected with a business or use which was once common but is now rare. The Sexlinger site is the last intact orange grove in Santa Ana remaining from the period of time when orange growing was the predominant business and land use in this area and exemplifies an important period in the City’s history, according to the City of Santa Ana. Community: HISTORIC RESOURCES COMMISSION TO TAKE PUBLIC TESTIMONY ON ALTERNATIVES FOR THE SEXLINGER FARMHOUSE AND ORANGE ORCHARD

SANTA ANA, CA (June 13, 2012) – On Thursday, June 28, 2012 the Santa Ana Historic Resources Commission will take public testimony on alternatives that could be used to preserve the Sexlinger Farmhouse and Orange Orchard. The property, located at 1584 E. Santa Clara Avenue, was recently placed on the Santa Ana Register of Historic Properties by the City Council. The property owners, Concordia University and Lutheran High School of Orange County, objected to the historic listing and on June 12, 2012 submitted a letter of intent to demolish the house and remove the orange trees. The property owners had previously submitted a proposal to develop the property with 24 new single-family homes, but this project is now on hold pending a 240-day waiting period during which alternatives to the demolition will be explored. The Metabolic Studio Supports Legal Defense Fund for Landmark Orange County Orchard

L.A. Times focuses on effort to save the Sexlinger Orchard

The L.A. Times published an article about the effort to save the Sexlinger Orchard this week. Here are a few excerpts from the article:

A real estate company wants to build 24 single-family homes on the land, but opponents with the Save Our Orchard Coalition say the project, currently in the review stage with the city, would destroy valuable property that could be preserved and used as an educational center and community garden.

The plot, purchased by the Sexlinger family in 1913, is one of the region’s oldest unaltered orange groves. A Craftsman bungalow, built by the family in 1914, still stands.

The Save the Sexlinger Orchard supporters are going to be holding another demonstration, on Saturday July 23, from 10:00am – 2:00pm, at the entrance of the Sexlinger Orchard. Continue reading→

The city of Santa Ana Planning and Building Agency is holding a “Scoping Meeting”

You will hear about this project and important dates and deadlines. You can also have your questions and concerns addressed.
