NO-BURN ALERT: MANDATORY WOOD-BURNING BAN IN EFFECT TOMORROW FOR RESIDENTS OF THE SOUTH COAST AIR BASIN

All Indoor and Outdoor Residential Wood Burning Prohibited Due to High Air Pollution Predicted for Tomorrow, January 9, 2015

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has issued a residential no-burn alert effective Friday, January 9, 2015, for all those living in the South Coast Air Basin, which includes the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County and the Inland Empire. SCAQMD reminds residents in these areas that burning wood in their fireplaces is prohibited from midnight tonight through midnight on Friday night. No-burn alerts are mandatory in order to protect public health due to a high concentration of fine particle air pollution forecast for the area. The no-burn prohibition also applies to manufactured fire logs, such as those made from wax or paper. Continue reading→

Exchange your gas powered mower for an electric mower, on July 23

How would you like to get rid of your gasoline powered lawn mower and exchange it for a new electric lawn mower – that won’t pollute our environment?

The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is hosting a lawnmower exchange program on July 23, in Anaheim.

Residents living within the South Coast Air Quality Management District’s 4-county jurisdiction are eligible to participate in the 2011 Electric Lawn Mower Exchange program. This region includes all of Orange County.

Pre-registration is required to exchange your lawnmower.

Unlike previous years, in order to be eligible to buy a new, cordless electric lawnmower for $100 under this year’s program, you must pre-register on the AQMD web site (www.aqmd.gov), or by calling our toll-free phone number (888) 425-6247. When you pre-register, you will be given a confirmation number, and a ½-hour time slot during which to come to the exchange site of your choice. Pre-registration is first come, first served.

Limit of one mower per residence.

Your old gasoline mower must be in operating condition to qualify for the trade-in.

The purpose of the program is to eliminate the emissions caused by old gasoline-powered mowers that would otherwise continue to be used.

What happens if you don’t appear at the exchange site during your pre-registered time slot?

Your confirmation guaranteeing you a mower is only good for the site and date you selected. We encourage you to arrive at the exchange site during your scheduled ½ hour time slot – not earlier and not later – to reduce traffic backups at the site. If you do not show up by the last time slot for the day you scheduled, your reservation will expire and cannot be used for another event.

Register’s Doug Irving grasping at straws

It’s either a really slow news day or the Register’s Santa Ana beat reporter Doug Irving is really desperate to try and tar and feather Mayor Miguel Pulido as election day grows closer. In article written today Irving goes after Pulido for appointing his brother Luis to a part-time position at the South Coast Air Quality Management District. The timing of the article is a bit peculiar given that Luis Pulido has been in that position since January 2009.

The appointment of Pulido’s brother does not violate any laws and is one hundred percent above board. Irving spoke with Dr. Barry Wallerstein, the Executive Officer with the SCAQMD, and according to the article he said, “The district has no restrictions against it, and said Luis Pulido met the job requirements.”

As Mayor Pulido pointed out his brother has a good understanding of air-quality issues do to his years of working in the muffler industy at the Pulido family’s Ace Muffler Shop on First Street in Santa Ana.

The article quotes Mayor Pulido as saying, “I believe that my brother had superior expertise in some of the issues that come before the board,” Pulido said. “It’s worked out very well.”

I suppose this article would have been of some consequence if the Mayor had actually done something illegal or if his brother was not qualified for the position but neither of those things apply here. This looks to be nothing more than the latest attempt by the Amezcua campaign and their friends in the media to create a controversy when none exists.

Irving has recently been said to be trying to equate Santa Ana to Bell. The only thing that the two cities have in common is that they are both governed by all Latino city councils. Bell councilmembers gave themselves huge pay raises and were being compensated in the neighborhood of six figures a year. The Santa Ana Mayor and Council have not received a pay raise sinc 1952.

Let me leave you with this, if Mayor Pulido’s brother is qualified for the position why should he be prevented from serving in this position? Lets not forget that President John F. Kennedy appointed his brother Robert to be Attorney General, would Irving, the Amezcua camp or the unhinged loons in the local blogosphere argue that he should have been prevented from doing this as well?
