DTSA’s first Tamale Festival set for this Thursday night

Tis the season for tamales! Downtown Santa Ana invites you to the Inaugural Tamale Festival, also known as a Tamalada, on Thursday, December 19, 2019.

The festival, which is co-sponsored by the City of Santa Ana, will take place from 5 to 10 p.m. on West Fourth Street between Ross and Broadway streets.

Bring your hearty appetite to the Tamale Fest because there will be a variety of scrumptious tamales provided by: El Indio, Chevita’s, Latino Health Access, Café Cultura, Chapter One, La Vegana Mexicana and Palapas.

The event is free and open to the public.

Live entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. with DJ Allierockk, followed by Trio Salazar, Mantra (Tribute to Mana) and Mariachi Perla. Beer Garden sponsored by The Frida Cinema and operated by The Mission Bar.

Community Alert: SANTA ANA’S BEST TAMALE CONTEST / CONCURSO ANNUAL DEL MEJOR TAMAL EN SANTA ANA

The City of Santa Ana will be holding its Third Annual Plaza Navideña event on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at the Downtown Plaza Calle Cuatro on the corner of Fourth and French Streets. The event will take place from 5:00pm-8:00pm and will feature the Santa Ana’s Best Tamale contest. All licensed restaurants located within the city are invited to compete!

To participate, download the application at http://santa-ana.org/parks/upcomingevents/default.asp. Fill out the application and email it to Patty Lopez at plopez@santa-ana.org or hand-deliver it to the Santa Ana Public Library, attention Patty Lopez. Applications will be accepted from Monday, October 12, 2015 through Tuesday, November 13, 2015. The tamale tasting will take place during the Plaza Navideña event on Saturday, December 12, 2015 where the Winner and Honorable Mentions will be selected.

La Ciudad de Santa Ana celebrará su Tercer Festival Anual de Plaza Navideña el sábado, 12 de diciembre de 2015 en el Downtown Plaza Calle Cuatro situado en la esquina de las calles Cuatro y French. El evento se llevará a cabo entre las 5:00pm y 8:00pm y se presentará el concurso del Mejor Tamal de Santa Ana. ¡Se invitan a competir todos los restaurantes autorizados con licencia ubicados dentro de la ciudad!

Latino Health Access Tamalada set for December 19

Latino Health Access tamale sale

Latino Health Access welcomes the holiday season with its annual Tamalada or tamale party. They serve a healthy version of this Latin American wrapped corn meal that is low calorie and lard free.  The tamales will be served with beans, salad and a drink and entertainment will be provided as well.

The Tamalada event is set for December 19, 2014, from 5 to 9 pm, at 450 W. 4th St., Suite 130, in Santa Ana.

The founding of Santa Ana to be celebrated on Oct. 25

Plaza Founders

Members of the Tongva and Juaneño/Luiseño nations long inhabited the area we now know as Santa Ana. In 1810, year of the commencement of the war of Mexican Independence (1810–1821), Jose Antonio Yorba, a sergeant of the Spanish army, was granted land that he called Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana. Yorba’s rancho included the lands where the cities of Olive, Orange, Irvine, Yorba Linda, Villa Park, Santa Ana, Tustin, Costa Mesa and unincorporated El Modena, and Santa Ana Heights, are today. This rancho was the only land grant in Orange County granted under Spanish Rule.

After the Mexican-American war ended in 1848, Alta California became part of the United States and American settlers arrived in this area. Claimed in 1869 by Kentuckian William H. Spurgeon on land obtained from the descendents of Jose Antonio Yorba, Santa Ana was incorporated as a city in 1886 with a population of 2000 and in 1889 became the seat of the newly formed Orange County. ANNUAL TAMALADA BENEFIT

December 10, 2010 | 5 – 9pm

The motto and rallying cry of Latino Health Access is, “We will have a healthier community, even if we have to sell tamales.” This phrase is derived from a common Mexican proverb. It means that in the face of adversity, people can call upon their talents to overcome obstacles and accomplish something extraordinary.

We adopted the saying when a patient from our diabetes class became partially blind. Although unable to afford the $5,000 eye surgery to save his vision, he refused to give up. He would have that surgery, even if he had to sell tamales. He was the inspiration for the first Tamalada.

On December 10, 2010 we invite you to join us for a delicious tamale dinner the proceeds of which will support our Diabetes Self-Management Program. This is an activity for the entire family. You will have the opportinity to make your very own tamales, take a commemorative photo and then enjoy live entertainment.

Although pan dulces are their strong point, Grande’s tamales are very good and always fresh. The red chile beef and pork are equally good, but the star of the show is the green chile cheese. Tamales are made by hand continuously throughout the day. Extremely consistent in all respects. They open and close early, 6am–2pm and are closed on Mondays.

Variable taste and consistency but always wonderful.

Tamales for families during the Christmas festivities is a tradition in the Santa Ana Community. We take pride to bring you our hand made delicious spicy, mouth watering tamales.

The Kiwanis of Santa Ana is fundraising for Book Awards and Tuition for low income SAC students. Tamales will be available for pick-up on the first week and second week of December. we are offering homemade tamales through pre-order only. Pork with Red Sauce, Chicken with Green Sauce and Jalapenos & Cheese.
