I had a long talk this afernoon with a Santa Ana insider who had some amazing chismes for me. I was expecting that perhaps Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido would run for the Orange County Supervisorial seat that is currently held by Janet Nguyen, but apparently Councilman Vincent Sarmiento has decided to run, and Pulido is not going to oppose him.
But the biggest shocker was that Measure D may be in trouble – and that it could be reversed if it is challenged in court. That was the measure that extended the term limits of the Santa Ana Council Members by four years, from 8 years to 12. That measure was on the ballot in a special election but apparently it should have been put in front of the voters in a general election. What this means, if it does get wiped out, is that several Santa Ana Council Members will be termed out – including Michele Martinez and Sal Tinajero. Continue reading
So many chismes! The big one I am hearing is that the Santa Ana City Council is preparing to hire a new City Manager at a special meeting next week, perhaps on Tuesday, and that they are continuing to accept job applications through this Friday. But who would want to work for this bunch?
Santa Ana Council Member Michele Martinez is up for re-election in 2014. But this time she won’t be getting a free pass. I hear a very well-connected Latina is preparing to challenge her! Considering how poorly Martinez fared in last June’s Open Primary, when she came in almost last in her campaign for the 69th Assembly District, she better be worried about this. She blew some $200K on that race. Who will donate money to her now? Continue reading

Orange County’s Democratic State Assembly Representatives, Tom Daly and Sharon Quirk-Silva, did not vote for the “Trust Act,” which made its way once more through the California Assembly this week by a final vote of 44-22, according to Gabriel San Roman over at the OC Weekly.
San Roman reported that “The legislation was vetoed late last year when it reached the desk of Democratic Governor Jerry Brown. Supporters say the bill authored by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano will limit deportations fueled by the fingerprint-sharing federal Secure Communities program while restoring confidence between law enforcement and largely immigrant, Latino communities. Our new Assemblymember, Tom Daly, has been rather quiet since he replaced Jose Solorio, in the 69th Assembly District. I saw him at this year’s Tet Parade and now he is finally getting around to meeting with the people of Santa Ana. Daly is hosting a “Capitol in Your Corner” event on Friday, March 15, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., during the workday of course, at the Librería Martinez de Chapman University, located at 216 N. Broadway, in Downtown Santa Ana.

Did the gay activists who insisted that their supporters who are elected officials boycott the Tet Parade, in Little Saigon, this past Sunday actually hurt their political allies? Rest assured that the Republican elected officials, including Assemblyman Travis Allen (pictured above) were very well received by the masses at the Parade.
RSCCD Trustee Jose Solorio, for example, showed up in a car he was sharing with Ken Nguyen, the leader of a local Vietnamese American charity. But Solorio jumped out of the car, to go hang out with the gay activists, leaving Nguyen to navigate his way through the rest of the parade, without Solorio (see the picture below). It made for a bizarre image. The worst part is that Solorio hopes to run for the 34th State Senate District in just two years – and now he has some explaining to do to the entire Vietnamese American community in Little Saigon! SARMIENTO WANTS TO CREATE A COMMITTEE TO DISCUSS DISSOLVING OTHER COMMITTEES
“The City Council has taken another step toward reducing the mayor’s authority by voting to give the council, rather than the mayor alone, the power to appoint members to council committees,” according to the O.C. Register.
I have no problem with that – in fact the Council Members hate serving on most of these committees and often run away from these assignments. Now they have no excuse.

The year 2012 was a great year for news in Santa Ana. I have reviewed all of our readership data and come up with our top ten stories in Santa Ana this year. Here they are:
Jose Solorio no longer has to fly to Sacramento every week to do business in the State Legislature, having termed out as our Assemblyman in the 69th Assembly District. Reportedly he has his eyes on State Senator Lou Correa’s seat in the 34th State Senate District, which will open up in 2014.
Solorio was just elected to the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education, where he was quickly appointed the Board Vice President. He might be the most overqualified School Board Trustee in Orange County – but it is great to see him leading a new Latino majority on a board that once was almost lily white. Continue reading
Assemblyman Jose Solorio is leaving the State Legislature soon and he will be returning to a part time job as a new Trustee on the Rancho Santiago Community College District’s Board of Education. Solorio sent out a farewell email today, outlining what he feels are his accomplishments:

As my six years in the State Assembly come to an end today, I want to thank you and let you know it has been an honor to serve the constituents of the 69th Assembly District. I am grateful that my tenure in the State Assembly resulted in many accomplishments, especially in light of the fiscal and political crises that dominated the last five years. Continue reading
Former State Senator John Lewis has such a hold on the Republican Party of Orange County that he was able to force the withdrawal of Robert Hammond, their candidate for the 69th Assembly District, so as to pave the way for his Democratic pal Tom Daly. And Lewis also ran the failed campaign of Chris Norby, for the 65th Assembly District. With the loss of Norby’s seat, and the 69th, the California Republican Party ceded a supermajority in the State Assembly to the California Democratic Party.
But Lewis is not the only one to blame. OC GOP Chairman Scott Baugh (a political consultant) and OC Supervisor Janet Nguyen were personally involved in pulling Hammond out of the race for the 69th. And neither of them helped Jose “Joe” Moreno, the Anaheim Republican who, at the last minute, filed for the 69th rather than concede the victory to Daly. Moreno was however undone by allegations that he violated an obscure Federal law – the Hatch Act. Moreno, an employee of the O.C. Health Agency, was accused of this by labor, even though he is a longtime union member. Continue reading
Jordan Brandman has won a seat on the Anaheim City Council and now his colleagues on the Anaheim Union High School District’s Board of Education must decide whether to appoint someone to replace him or to hold a Special Election to fill his seat.
The last time the AUHSD School Board replaced a Trustee was this year when Trustee Jan Harp-Domene passed away suddenly earlier this year. The Board replaced her with Annmarie Randle-Trejo who went on to win a permanent place on the AUHSD School Board in this year’s general election, according to Smart Voter.

Two winners – U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez and Pres. Barack Obama
Fullerton residents are in shock today as they deal with the fact that Assemblyman Chris Norby now needs a job, having lost to Fullerton Mayor Sharon Quirk-Silva. She ran an aggressive campaign and made heavy use of social media. Norby, on the other hand, seemed to be trying to coast to victory.
While Quirk-Silva’s victory is a great one for Orange County’s Latino voters, I am saddened to see that the 69th Assembly District is now represented by Tom Daly. There is no way he will win re-election in two years, but for now we are stuck with him.
