Retired Valley High School teacher is running for the SAUSD School Board
Shuntele Andrews, a retired Santa Ana teacher, is running for the SAUSD School Board in November. She taught Social Studies and History at Valley High School in Santa Ana for 35 years. She was raised in Santa Ana since the age of 11, attending Santa Ana public schools, going on to UCI to earn her Bachelor’s and then the University of Southern California to get her Masters of Education and teaching credentials. She has received the Teacher of the Year award three times and served as the Social Science/History department chair for five years. She has also served on the Blue Ribbon commission and several hiring committees for the principals of Valley High School. Upon retirement she has continued to work for SAUSD as a substitute and CELDT tester.

SAUSD high school students awarded an all-expense paid trip to England
Congratulations to Century and Valley high school students for being awarded trip overseas
Sebastian Alvarado, an AVID freshman at Century High School, and Alejandro Flores, a junior at Valley High School, were recently recognized at the British American Business Council of Orange County gala dinner at the Anaheim Hilton and awarded a two week all-expense paid trip to study British history over the summer.
The British American Council OC Student Scholarship Program awards two scholarships based on an essay contest. Sebastian learned about this opportunity at his local Boys and Girls Club where he plays soccer. Sebastian is no ordinary young man. He has undergone three open heart surgeries and has successfully recovered each time putting 100% into being a successful student. Continue reading
SAUSD principal votes to slash OC Lutheran schools’ funding
Planning commissioners have moved forward with a plan to build houses on the old Sexlinger property, and to save the century-old farmhouse and to preserve 10 orange trees of the more than 200 on the property, according to the O.C. Register.
But one Planning Commissioner voted against the compromise. Patrick Yrarrazaval, a Principal at the SAUSD’s Valley High School, spoke in favor of the conservancy’s 50/50 alternative as he voted against the compromise.
“I ask the question to the applicants, how much money do the two schools need to fulfill the desires of Martha Sexlinger?” Yrarrazaval said. Continue reading
Coach Larry Mohr is back at Valley High School!
Larry Mohr is still the football coach at Santa Ana Valley, according to OC Varsity!
Mohr said he was called into a meeting this week in which he was told he will return as head coach. This comes almost three weeks after Mohr and the school appeared to part ways. “I met with the district on Monday and they stated to me that I am still the football coach at Valley High School,” said Mohr, who has accumulated a 48-28-1 record in seven years at Valley.

Parents hold a community meeting regarding the ouster of Valley’s football coach
Santa Ana Valley High School’s students and parents held a community meeting at Centennial Park today, Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 2 pm, to discuss why their Principal, Patrick D. Yrarrázaval-Correa, forced out their popular Football Coach, Larry Mohr.
SAUSD Trustees Cecilia Iglesias and John Palacio were invited to attend meeting Centennial Park is located at 3000 W Edinger Ave, in Santa Ana. There is a high school there – Godinez Fundamental, and a Santa Ana College extension campus. Continue reading

Flag football game to benefit Valley H.S. Coach Frankie Oviedo set for 9/1
On Sunday September 1st, 2013, from 10 am – 4pm on the Valley High School football field, the Valley Football Alumni will be hosting a Flag football Game to benefit Coach Frankie Oviedo. Coach Oviedo has been working at Valley High School for more than 20 years. During this time he has been coaching at Valley in both football and basketball. Coach Oviedo has much to celebrate this year his eldest daughter recently got married and gave birth to his first grandchild, also after coaching his youngest daughter softball team she will be a freshman at Valley High School. Everything changed around April when he was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer and after a current PET scan it revealed that the cancer has spread to his liver and it has become inoperable.
The boys found out and were devastated by the news and wanted to show him that they care. So Juan Padilla and his Fiancee Elvia Arceo came up with the idea of hosting a flag football game so that they can raise money and show Coach that they love him and support him. Continue reading

SANTA ANA, CA-‐-‐On July 23rd, 2013, students, parents, and community organizations will pack the Santa Ana School Board meeting to demand that the Board reinstate Mike Rodriguez and Kate Cascella for the next school year. (Click here to see the flier about this protest).
Both teachers were non-‐re-elected by the Santa Ana Unified School District this year. Non-‐reelection means that they will not be allowed to teach in a Santa Ana school this coming year, and the district did not give any reason whatsoever for their dismissal. Continue reading

Valley High School Culinary Arts Students Win
National Cooking Up Change Competition in D.C. for the Second Consecutive Year
The Valley High School Culinary Arts team is the reigning champions in the national Cooking Up Change competition that was held in Washington, D.C. Monday, June 10, 2013. This is the second consecutive year that Valley has taken home the title. The team consisted of three students — Carlos Ortiz (12th), Cecilia Magana (12th) and Cesar Amezcua (11th), supported by their Culinary Arts Teacher Monica Aguilar. Continue reading
Was the SAUSD tipped off about a gas leak at Valley High before the boiler blew?
Administrators had recently received several complaints from Santa Ana Valley High School staff about a strong smell of gas in a building where an explosion took place Tuesday morning, according to two sources close to the situation, according to the Voice of OC.
The SAUSD is denying any knowledge of complaints about possible gas leaks but if they did know, and did nothing about it, the district could be held liable by Cal/OSHA for willfully and negligently endangering the lives of SAUSD employees at Valley High School, and I would imagine that both the State and County Departments of Education would want to look into this as well – as students’ lives were also put in danger. Valley High School’s gym boiler blows up and students are evacuated
An explosion, possibly involving a malfunctioning water heater, lifted the roof off the Valley High School gym, in Santa Ana, Tuesday morning and sent students scrambling for cover just before the start of classes, according to NBC News.
Four people were hospitalized as a precaution: Three people had hearing issues, and one person was transported due to anxiety. Three other people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, according to ABC News. Continue reading
SAPD arrests man who tried to kidnap a 15-year old Valley H.S. student
On 4/24/2013, at 8:24am, a 15-year-old girl was walking to Valley High School in the area of 1250 S. Sullivan. As she walked past a small red compact vehicle that was parked on the street, a male Hispanic, later identified as suspect Moises Rendon (28), Santa Ana, suddenly jumped out of the passenger seat wearing gloves and holding a rag in one hand. The suspect ran toward victim and attempted to grab her. The girl was able to escape and ran. The suspect then re-entered the vehicle, which was subsequently driven out of the area by the other male occupant.
The incident was immediately reported by witnesses who described the vehicle and suspect. Officers arrived at the scene and learned the suspect may reside at the residence in the 1400 block S. Sullivan. Officers responded to the location and made contact with a possible suspect. A field show-up with the victim and a witness resulted in positive identification of the suspect Moises Rendon. The driver and suspect vehicle is still outstanding. The suspect vehicle is described as a red Toyota Corolla with a spoiler on the rear trunk. Suspect Rendon will be booked into the Santa Ana Police Department Jail for Attempt Kidnap. Continue reading

The award-winning culinary arts team at Valley High School in the Santa Ana Unified School District is making preparations to remain the champions of the National Cooking up Change® competition. On April 18, at Northgate Gonzalez Market Corporate Headquarters in Anaheim, Valley High School culinary arts students will join other student chefs from local high school culinary programs in Orange County to chop, slice and serve up fresh, healthy and delicious school menus as part of Cooking up Change®.
