Community: Santa Ana Public Library Invites Youth to Participate in “Hour of Code!”

Santa Ana, CA – The Santa Ana Public Library recently received a $25,000 grant from the American Library Association (ALA) to pilot coding programs for youth and young adults in the City of Santa Ana! The Santa Ana Public Library is one of 28 libraries nationally to receive a grant from Libraries Ready to Code, an initiative of the American Library Association sponsored by Google, promoting early development of Computer Science (CS) and Computational Thinking (CT) skills in young people around the globe!

International Computer Science Education Week kicks off programming events on Monday, December 4, 2017 and will wrap up on Sunday, December 10, 2017. The Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) is an annual program dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest and engage in computer science through free, introductory activities sponsored in communities around the world (https://csedweek.org/about). SANTA ANA – The award-winning Santa Ana Public Library promotes literacy and provides a fun and safe gathering place for adults and families all year long. Once again, the Santa Ana Public Library is proud to present their annual Summer Reading Program, an exciting, literary-based program for children, teens, and adults.

This year’s theme is “Reading by Design,” a creative way to use the spirit of reading to show that literacy is the foundation for all, be it architecture, fashion, or art! The Summer Reading Program is an excellent way to promote reading and continuous development for people of all ages. For children and teens, participation in a vacation reading program strengthens their reading skills and helps prevent them from falling behind academically. The Santa Ana Public Library is celebrating International Games Day on Saturday, November 19th from 12:00pm-5:00pm on the second floor of the Library in Meeting Room A.

Guests are invited to share their enthusiasm for interactive gaming experiences with other members of their community. Participation is free of charge and will include the chance to play classic board games with a twist, from Monopoly-Mini to Life-Sized Candyland, along with modern gaming experiences including virtual reality, video games, and an opportunity to sign up to compete in an official Yu-Gi-Oh card tournament. Anaheim is on to FootGolf, why is Santa Ana asleep at the wheel?

Anaheim added the new sport of FootGolf to their Mtz, at the Dad Miller Golf Course in May, and it has since then generated $7,000 from fees. Officials expect revenues to increase to $25,000 next year, according to the O.C. Register.

What exactly is footgolf? FootGolf is a combination of the popular sports of soccer and golf. The game is played with a regulation #5 soccer ball at a golf course facility on shortened holes with 21-inch diameter cups. The rules largely correspond to the rules of golf.

OCDA HOSTS 17TH ANNUAL SUMMER YOUTH EDUCATION CONFERENCE FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Local high school students will have the opportunity this week to get a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to be a prosecutor, defense attorney, police detective, and judge during the 17th annual Summer Youth Education Conference. This weeklong program began today and will include 35 to 40 hours of hands-on activities, culminating in a mock trial and a graduation ceremony on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016.

“This program is a great way for young people in our community to learn about the criminal justice system,” said District Attorney Tony Rackauckas. “Some of these students will one day serve our community as the next generation of prosecutors, police officers, and judges.” Continue reading→

The Delhi Center will host a Summer Enrichment Day Camp from June 20 to Aug. 18

The Delhi Center, in partnership with Active Learning and MASA, is hosting a Summer Enrichment Day Camp in English and Spanish from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on June 20 through August 18, 2016. This day camp is for children from ages 6 to 13. Lunch and snacks will be provided daily.

The summer day camp will include visual and performing arts classes, media arts training, and an end of summer talent show.

Participants will learn interviewing and storytelling techniques and will explore the arts, culture and the use of mixed media to create a film to showcase the rich history of their lives and their community. Continue reading→

The 10th Annual Jamboree — Get Cubed or Be Square

SANTA ANA, CA (January 14, 2016) – Parenting OC magazine has partnered with Discovery Cube in Santa Ana to present the 10th Anniversary Edition of the Kids’ Summer Opportunities Jamboree event, to take place on March 5, 2016 at the iconic Orange County family destination. Discovery Cube, which expanded this past summer, doubling in size, and adding among other attractions, the 10,000 square-foot Julianne Argyros Showcase Theater, is the leading hands-on science center for families in Southern California. On the day of the Jamboree event, which is free to attend, the Center is also offering free childrens’ passes for admittance to the Cube.

AT-RISK YOUTH EARN 850 TURKEY DINNERS IN OCDA’S 6TH ANNUAL THANKSGIVING GANG PREVENTION INCENTIVE

SANTA ANA, Calif. – Turkey dinners will be awarded today to 850 at-risk students who succeeded in Orange County Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership’s (OC GRIP) 6th annual Thanksgiving challenge to improve their attendance, behavior, and grades in time for Thanksgiving.

Ralphs/Food 4 Less and Saddleback Church donated over 850 turkey dinners this year compared to 400 in years past, as part of the ongoing OC GRIP gang prevention effort to keep kids in school and out of gangs. The total donation is valued at over $25,000. OC GRIP extended the incentive to students at 51 schools this year. Continue reading→

The City of Santa Ana is pleased to announce its Water Conservation Poster Contest, an educational project open to all Santa Ana youth ages 5-18. Using the theme “Every Drop Counts: Let’s Not Waste It,” the contest is designed to inspire creativity while reinforce water conservation.

“The ‘Every Drop Counts’ theme is particularly timely and important for our youth to remember considering our current drought conditions,” says Councilmember Roman Reyna and Board Member of the Orange County Water District. “This contest offers parents and their children the opportunity to work together on a creative project while explore ways to cut back water use in their daily lives,” he adds. The Wooden Floor’s 2014 Auditions

The Wooden Floor, an arts-based youth development nonprofit, is hoping for a large turnout of low-income, primarily Latino families, on Saturday, October 17, 2015, as it opens its doors for its Annual Auditions Day. In order to reach the students who need The Wooden Floor’s services the most, word is spread throughout the community about the opportunity to join The Wooden Floor.

A privately-funded nonprofit organization, The Wooden Floor uses a successful model of strategically-integrating intensive dance education with academic programs, college and career readiness programs, and family support services to help students change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of the poverty cycle. Since 2005, 100 percent of The Wooden Floor’s graduates have finished high school on time and immediately enrolled in college-something done by only about 45 percent of their socioeconomic peers. SANTA ANA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT PROVIDES FREE LUNCHES THROUGH SUMMER MEAL PROGRAM

SANTA ANA, CA — June 19, 2015 – The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) will be participating in a free summer lunch program at 51 school sites and 8 Parks and Recreation Centers across the district from June 22 to August 26.

The federally-funded program operates Monday through Friday for breakfast (except Parks and Recreation Centers) and lunch. The program is open to all youths under the age of 18, no income requirement or registration is necessary, and all participants must eat their lunch at the site. Continue reading→
